Gavin was born in New Zealand and first began taking pictures in his early 20’s as a way to document his life on the road as a drummer in a rock band. It wasn’t long before he fell in love with photography and within a few years he had made the decision to trade one artistic career for another. Due to limited opportunities in his hometown and a strong desire to develop his own style, he chose the self-taught route and after a few years of portfolio building he moved to Perth in 1997 and began shooting full time. Having spent the last 21 years honing his skills in the fashion capitals of the world; Sydney, Milan, Paris and London, he now calls the creative hub of Williamsburg in Brooklyn his home where he has spent the last 7 years. His forte of choice is beauty, where he has slowly forged a name for himself among the best in the business, mixing a very keen eye for detail with his love of light and composition. His clients around the world range from Vogue, Marie Claire and Cosmopolitan to Olay, Gillette and Garnier. He also shoots fashion and swimwear as well as being well-known for his nudes. Gavin is currently venturing into directing video and motion but says his love for photography is as strong today as it was when he first started so has no plans to make the move to directing full time – “I always feel like I have only just started to get somewhere in photography. I don’t think I’ll ever be finished”.
